how our club began
In the summer of 2019, Ana came up with the idea of starting a sustainability club at Lane after being unsatisfied by the lack of environmental education opportunities for students in schools. Today, Lane Tech Sustainability Club has over 100 active members and is regarded as one of the most important clubs at Lane for its sheer impact in providing environmental awareness materials to its members.
club goals (2020-2021)
This year, sustainability club will be honing in on implementing sustainable policies on a district-wide level. We are focused on making sure every student at Lane has access to somewhat of an environmental education and working on ensuring that in the future, CPS students, as well as students across the country, will either be required to take a course in environmental science and climate change, or changing the national science curriculum to include comprehensive lessons on the science of climate change.
At our meetings, we will be discussing changes that we want to implement on the district-wide level, some of which already being: banning styrofoam and single-use plastics, investing in LED's or more sustainable types of lighting for the schools, hosting a Green Monday campaign, among other initiatives. We will also be engaging in optional weekly volunteer events that focus on sustainability.

activities we did at school last year (2019-2020)
While we were still at school, our club held weekly beach cleanups on weekends at Montrose Beach. We planned to get a larger reach of participants, but due to COVID-19 and social distancing, we were unable to. Another activity we did was after school holiday activities. We made homemade soap in the aquaponics lab to give to our families as Christmas gifts and we also gift-wrapped presents with newspaper. During the school year, we held meetings where we discussed climate change, how to be more sustainable, and eco-tips.
